ACHIEVE are delighted to announce the signing of highly-rated Chorley winger Alex Newby to the agency.
Newby – who can also play up front – is a 22-year-old with blistering pace and he had a fantastic 2017-18 campaign with the National League North side, helping them to reach the play-offs.
Newby began his career with Bolton Wanderers, being a part of the club’s academy from the age of 9 through to 16, before moving to Morecambe. At the age of 18, he joined hometown club Barrow, where he spent two years and also had a loan spell at Kendal Town, before joining Evo-Stik Division One North side Clitheroe, where he bagged 19 goals during the 2017-18 season, before joining Chorley in January 2018.
Upon signing Newby to the club, Chorley boss Matt Jansen said, “He can play in a few different positions. He was scoring goals at Clitheroe.
“He can play wide of the three, as a No.10 or as a centre-forward.
“He is good on the ball, composed, scored a few goals and yes, it is a two-division step up for him but if he can do what he did at Clitheroe he will be great for us.
“Hopefully he can keep progressing and improving.”
He excelled at Chorley, scoring important goals, including a wonderful 25-yard strike at York City, and in wins over Blyth Spartans and AFC Telford United. He performed superbly in the play-offs, but was unable to help Chorley to overcome eventual play-off winner Harrogate Town.
Alex is the twin brother of AFC Telford United’s Elliott Newby.
ACHIEVE Director Dave Garley said, “Alex is a player who has come onto our radar through our scouting network.
“He is someone that, at 22 years of age, we feel possesses the qualities to really progress in the game. He has pace, he loves to run at defenders, he knows where the back of the net is.
“We have a long history at ACHIEVE of discovering players in the non-league system and helping them to progress to the Football League and Premier League and we firmly believe that Alex can follow in their footsteps.
“We are delighted to work with Alex.”
